How to Select a Suitable Pipeline Centrifugal Pump?

To choose the right pump, it is essential to consider technical and economic factors such as pump unit performance, investment costs, and operational efficiency, ensuring economical, safe, and practical operation. Key considerations include:
1.Efficiency & Energy Savings
Select highefficiency, lownoise, energysaving pumps—avoid obsolete models.
2. Flow Rate & Head Requirements
Determine the pump based on design flow rate and required head (H).
Account for performance degradation due to wear by multiplying the calculated head by 1.05–1.10.
Choose a pump with a gradually declining head curve (QH curve) for stable operation, especially in parallel setups.
Ensure the operating point remains within the highefficiency range to save energy and reduce wear.
3. Water Supply Network Considerations
If the pipeline lacks regulation, use variablespeed pumps or fixedspeed pump groups.
The pump group’s maximum flow rate must meet the peak demand, verified under firefighting conditions.
4. Pump Selection for Tanks & Water Towers
Prefer one operational pump + one standby pump; avoid unnecessary parallel setups.
If multiple pumps are needed, limit models to two types with similar head ranges.
Ensure each pump operates within its highefficiency zone even in parallel.
5. VariableFrequency Drive (VFD) Pumps
The design flow must cover the maximum instantaneous demand in the water supply system.
Ensure dual power supply (backup power) for reliability.
The operating point should be within the highefficiency zone of the QH curve, not on the extended section.
The least favorable operating point should be at the right endpoint of the highefficiency zone (maximum flow, lowest feasible head).
The speed adjustment range should stay within 25%–100% of pump capacity, optimizing efficiency.

6. Backup Pump Requirements
Pressurized water supply systems must include a standby pump with greater capacity than the largest operational pump.
Pumps should autoswitch for alternating operation.
